Big Dollars on Table for New Doctor

Huge dollars are being offered in hopes of attracting another full-time doctor to Rainy River.

An on-line ad posted by a recruiting service pegs salary and incentives at over half-a-million dollars,

Town Mayor Deb Ewald says everyone is doing what's they can to attract both doctors and locums to staff the local hospital's emergency room.

Ewald says there has been some interest in the recruitment effort.

Fort Employee Recognized for New Name

A Fort Frances mill employee says it's both exciting and a little overwhelming that she's play a part in coming up with AbitibiBowater's new corporate name.

Cyndi Strand says her submission of Resolute Forest Products reflects the strength of both the forest and the company.

Strand shared a cash reward with another employee in Tennessee who suggested the same name.

Smoke Fills Townshend Theatre

A machine that creates fake smoke set off two separate fire alarms at Fort Frances High School Friday.

The alarms occurred while crews were setting up for a concert featuring Canadian artists Neverest and Alyssa Reid.

The machines filled the Townshend Theatre with smoke and forced the brief evacuation of the school on both occasions.

Mining Objections

Divisions are sharpening over plans for copper-nickel mining in northern Minnesota.

Twin Metals Minnesota proposes a mine near Ely atop one of the world's largest untapped copper and nickel deposits.

But the site is near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area which worries environmentalists.

Chair Teresa Hazel says the Rainy River District Breast Health Network biennial event takes place this Saturday.

Tickets are available at hospitals across the district, as well as Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmasave in Fort Frances.
